Simplifying and understanding the internet, Wi-Fi, and computers

Are Seniors and Boomers aware of what Wi-Fi is?

Do older people know what Wi-Fi is or is this just for the young folks?? See the signs at Starbucks and wonder if you are missing something? Generally at home or work you connect your computer to the internet by using cables or wires. However, there is now WiFi. There are free WiFi spots at places like coffee houses, airports, motels, hotels, and even RV resorts an campgrounds with free WiFi. This means you use your laptop to connect to the internet without any cables or wires. Many times places like Starbucks, Panera Bread and Barnes & Noble will have the Wi-Fi insignia on their door or window. Then you drink a beverage, eat or read or wait at an airport while “surfing” the internet or doing your e-mail.

Seems like many of the people sitting at Starbucks anymore are sipping coffee and typing on a laptop – frequently in a business meeting. But these are usually folks in their 30s or younger. Older people need to understand about the advantages of Wi-Fi and get connected too.

Staying Current to Help Prevent Age Discrimination

Keep Up-To-Date

Ageism is age discrimination – but perhaps we can help ourselves as we age – and help prevent this in general if older Americans take a real interest in keeping up-to-date with the advances of modern society.

As we age it is really important that a person stays current.  I am always seeing some new high-tech gadget advertised on tv and I think what is that for?  Then I go to my local store and check it out.  I may decide I don’t need it, but I want to know what it is.  Today we have GPS systems for the car, computers,  high-tech cell phones that get you to the internet, VoIP, Skype – do we know what these are?  I wouldn’t want my children, grandchildren or friends to think I was old-fashioned and out-of-date.

Learning shouldn’t stop when we leave school.  It is good that we continue to learn no matter how old we are.  Learning helps our brain to make new connections and our memory better, and – hey – it also makes us more interesting people.  Another benefit older Americans should understand is that it can SAVE MONEY!  It can be cheaper to make reservations for airlines, hotels and rental cars on-line (over the internet).  Yes, previous generations were brought up in “simpler times” but this is the way modern life is moving – we need to take advantage of it.
